Nellie mckay sister orchid album5/10/2023 Perhaps most affecting, McKay juxtaposes her arty conceits with her sweetly earnest delivery, a choice that helps make the album both intriguing and surprisingly moving. Sister Orchid is Nellies seventh album, starting with Get Away From Me (a tour de force The New York Times), Normal As Blueberry Pie: A Tribute to. She takes this deft conceptualism even further on Cole Porter's "I Concentrate on You," framing her delicate a cappella vocals with nature sounds, including a seagull's call and waves softly hitting a beach. Nellie McKay has released six acclaimed albums, won a Theatre World Award for her Broadway portrayal of Polly Peachum in The Threepenny Opera, co-created and starred in the award winning off-Broadway hit Old Hats, and written musical biographies around a compelling gallery of ladies - from environmental pioneer Rachel Carson to the life. One could almost take her whistling intro "How About You" for granted until she brings it back, whistling along with her vocals at the end. That said, the minimalist vibe belies McKay's knack for conceptual, almost cinematic presentation. Even when she goes for a more robust arrangement, playing bass and ukulele on "Accentuate the Positive," the result sounds pleasingly spontaneous. In particular, her swaying take on "Up a Lazy River" evokes the feel of relaxed summer's day as she sings while strumming a ukulele. There's a laid-back, bedroom cabaret quality to these performances, as if McKay is flipping through one of her favorite song books and giving off-the-cuff takes on songs that catch her fancy. Sister Orchid is a vocal jazz music album recording by NELLIE MCKAY released in 2018 on CD, LP/Vinyl and/or cassette. Along with singing, she also plays all the instruments here, accompanying herself at various times on piano, ukulele, bass, Fender Rhodes, and even Theremin. Nellie McKay returns to SFJAZZ for the first time in over a decade with music from across her career including standards from her 2018 album Sister Orchid. As with Sister Orchid, here McKay performs a handful of beloved classic songs in a distinctly spare style. The new album, produced by McKay and Robin Pappas, was recorded in Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, New York, Jamaica, the Pocono Mountains, and even more than her previous albums, combines diverse musical moods and cultures. On the heels of her atmospheric 2018 standards album Sister Orchid, singer/pianist Nellie McKay offers an equally lowkey and misty follow-up EP with 2019's Bagatelles. Songs from the new project were recently debuted at her NYC engagement at Feinstein’s, and The New York Post noted that “songs like ‘Bodega’ and ‘Caribbean Time’… feature a blend of whimsical humor and social commentary that blended in beautifully alongside the Doris Day standards from the Blueberry Pie album.” Home Sweet Mobile Home is McKay’s latest and first album of all-original material since 2007′s Obligatory Villagers, and features the musical wanderlust, lyrical playfulness and unique point of view that has characterized her music since her breakthrough debut Get Away From Me. But beneath the charming melodic surface is a wit that cuts, and a sharply tuned social conscience. Her music is as tuneful and clever as the best of the Great American Songbook-part cabaret, part sparkly pop. She’s done Brecht on Broadway, opened for Lou Reed at Carnegie Hall, sung Woody Allen movie songs at the Hollywood Bowl, performed on A Prairie Home Companion, duetted with Eartha Kitt and Triumph The Insult Comic Dog, played Hilary Swank’s sister on the big screen, paid tribute to Doris Day, and released four wildly acclaimed albums of original music.
